Drone surveying and mapping: RTK, ground control points and lidar drones

Short answer: Drone surveying uses an unmanned aircraft carrying a camera or lidar sensor to capture overlapping data over a site, which software turns into orthomosaics, surface models, point clouds and contours. Survey-grade results need accurate positioning: an RTK or PPK drone, ground control points measured with a GNSS rover, and independent checkpoints to prove the final accuracy.

Key takeaways

  • Drone surveying covers large open areas far faster than ground methods, but it still depends on ground-based GNSS control for verified accuracy.
  • Photogrammetry suits open, hard surfaces; a lidar drone is the better choice under vegetation and on complex structures.
  • RTK and PPK drones reduce the number of ground control points needed but do not remove the need for checkpoints.
  • Ground sample distance, overlap and control layout drive drone mapping accuracy more than the aircraft model.
  • A GNSS RTK rover is the core ground instrument for any professional drone survey workflow.

What is drone surveying?

Drone surveying is the capture of measurable spatial data from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), usually by flying a planned grid over a site and recording overlapping photos or lidar scans. Processing software then calculates the 3D shape of the ground and features, producing maps and models tied to a coordinate system.

Drone mapping is now common for topographic surveys, earthworks, mines, quarries, agriculture and construction progress monitoring. It complements, rather than replaces, ground survey instruments. Every survey-grade drone project still relies on ground measurements for control, checks and features that cannot be seen from the air, such as manhole inverts or points under bridges.

The key questions for any UAV land surveying job are which sensor to fly, how to position the data accurately, and how to prove that accuracy to the client.

Aerial photogrammetry vs lidar drone: which do you need?

Choose aerial photogrammetry for open, textured surfaces and visual deliverables; choose a lidar drone where vegetation, power lines or complex structures would defeat image matching.

Drone photogrammetry reconstructs 3D geometry by matching the same features in many overlapping images. Lidar (light detection and ranging) measures distances directly with laser pulses, and its multiple returns can reach the ground through gaps in vegetation. Read more in our article on what lidar is and how lidar scanners work.

Many lidar sensors for drones also carry a camera, so a single flight can deliver colourised point clouds and imagery.

How accurate is drone mapping?

Well-controlled drone surveys typically reach a few centimetres horizontally and slightly worse vertically, but accuracy is a result of the workflow, not a fixed property of the aircraft.

For photogrammetry, the starting point is ground sample distance (GSD), the size of one image pixel on the ground. GSD depends on flight height, camera sensor and focal length. As a typical rule of thumb, horizontal accuracy of about 1–2 × GSD and vertical accuracy of about 1.5–3 × GSD are achievable with good control and overlap. Lower flights give smaller GSD but cover less area per battery.

Other factors include image overlap (typically around 70–80 % forward and 60–70 % side), camera calibration, surface texture, and the quality and distribution of ground control. For lidar, accuracy depends on the sensor, the aircraft’s GNSS/IMU trajectory and strip alignment. In both cases, independent checkpoints are the only reliable way to report drone accuracy.

RTK drone, PPK or ground control points?

An RTK drone corrects its own camera positions in real time, PPK corrects them after the flight, and ground control points (GCPs) tie the model to surveyed marks on the ground. Most professional jobs combine on-board GNSS correction with at least some ground control.

RTK (real-time kinematic) uses a correction stream from a base station or NTRIP service during the flight. PPK (post-processed kinematic) logs raw GNSS data on the drone and on a base receiver, then computes the trajectory afterwards, which avoids radio dropouts in flight. Our explainer on how RTK GPS works covers the principle.

MethodGround control neededMain advantageMain risk
GCPs only (standard GNSS on drone)Many, spread across the siteWorks with any droneTime-consuming to place and measure
RTK droneFew GCPs plus checkpointsAccurate positions immediatelyCorrection link loss during flight
PPK droneFew GCPs plus checkpointsRobust; no live link neededExtra processing step; base data required

Even with an RTK GPS drone, a small number of GCPs helps detect vertical bias, and checkpoints are still needed to demonstrate accuracy.

How to set up ground control for a drone survey

Ground control for a drone topographic survey is measured with a GNSS RTK rover or total station before or during the flight. A typical sequence looks like this:

  1. Plan the layout: place GCPs around the perimeter and through the interior, covering the full elevation range. Keep some marks as checkpoints that are not used in processing.
  2. Set targets: use high-contrast targets sized to several times the planned GSD, on stable, flat ground away from tall objects.
  3. Establish the base: set a GNSS base on a known point, or connect the rover to an NTRIP network. On remote sites, an external UHF radio extends correction range.
  4. Measure each target: occupy the centre of each GCP and checkpoint with the RTK rover, using averaged observations and a fixed solution.
  5. Record metadata: note coordinate system, geoid model, point IDs and antenna heights.
  6. Log base data for PPK: if the drone uses PPK, keep the base receiver logging raw observations throughout the flight.

Drone mapping software and deliverables

Drone mapping software turns raw images or lidar data into georeferenced products. The core processing steps are image alignment or trajectory processing, dense matching or point cloud generation, and surface and map creation.

Typical deliverables from drone surveying and mapping include:

  • Orthomosaic: a distortion-corrected aerial map with uniform scale, used for site plans and aerial maps with property lines overlaid in GIS.
  • Digital surface model (DSM) and digital terrain model (DTM): the DSM includes buildings and vegetation; the DTM represents bare ground.
  • Point cloud and 3D model: for volume calculation, design checks and 3D drone modelling.
  • Contours and breaklines: for drone topographic mapping and design.
  • Volume reports: for drone stockpile measurement and cut-and-fill tracking.

When choosing drone photogrammetry software or lidar processing tools, check support for your coordinate systems and geoid, checkpoint reporting, and export to open formats such as LAS and GeoTIFF.

How much does drone surveying cost?

Drone survey cost depends mainly on the sensor, site size, accuracy requirement and how much ground control is needed. Prices vary widely by country, so treat the points below as general guidance.

  • Equipment: a photogrammetry drone suitable for mapping typically costs a few thousand US dollars or more; an RTK version costs more. A lidar drone system, including sensor and aircraft, is typically many times that, often tens of thousands of dollars or higher.
  • Ground equipment: a GNSS RTK base and rover, targets and a controller are needed for control and checks.
  • Software and computing: processing licences and a powerful workstation.
  • Operations: pilot certification, permits, insurance and field time.

For drone mapping services, providers usually price by area, deliverables and accuracy. Ask whether the quote includes ground control, checkpoints and an accuracy report.

Ground survey equipment for drone projects

The aircraft gets most of the attention, but the GNSS receiver on the ground decides whether a drone survey can be trusted. A rover that fixes quickly and holds a stable solution makes GCP work fast and repeatable.

Mars Geosystems’ E1 GNSS RTK receiver works as a radio base, radio rover or NTRIP rover, with a 1408-channel full-constellation engine, IMU tilt survey up to 60° and up to 20 hours of battery life. The lighter E1 Lite weighs about 870 g. For larger sites, the external UHF radio (5 W / 25 W, 410–470 MHz) extends base-to-rover range, and the same base can log data for PPK processing.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is drone surveying?

With good ground control, appropriate overlap and a suitable flight height, drone photogrammetry typically reaches a few centimetres horizontally and somewhat more vertically. Lidar drones achieve similar or better results on vegetated ground. Actual accuracy must be verified with independent checkpoints measured by a GNSS rover or total station, not assumed from specifications.

Do I still need ground control points with an RTK drone?

Usually yes, though far fewer. An RTK or PPK drone positions its images accurately, but a few ground control points help catch vertical offsets and datum errors. Independent checkpoints are still essential to report and prove the accuracy of the final map or surface model to the client.

What is the difference between RTK and PPK drones?

An RTK drone receives corrections live during the flight and computes precise positions in real time. A PPK drone records raw GNSS data and combines it with base station data after landing. PPK avoids problems from a lost correction link, while RTK gives immediate results. Many drones support both.

Is a lidar drone better than photogrammetry for surveying?

It depends on the site. Lidar is better for terrain under vegetation, power lines and complex structures, because laser pulses can reach the ground through gaps. Photogrammetry is cheaper and gives excellent imagery and models on open, textured ground such as earthworks and stockpiles. Many firms use both.

How much does a lidar drone cost?

A complete lidar drone system, including aircraft, sensor and processing software, typically costs many times more than a camera drone, often in the tens of thousands of US dollars or higher. Price depends on sensor range, accuracy, number of returns and integrated camera. Ground GNSS equipment and training are additional costs.

What equipment do you need for a drone topographic survey?

You need a mapping drone with a suitable camera or lidar sensor, flight planning and processing software, ground targets, and a GNSS RTK base and rover or network RTK rover to measure control points and checkpoints. A total station is useful for features that must be measured precisely on the ground.
