Hydraulic vs electric auto steer: orbital valve kits vs steering wheel motors

Short answer: Hydraulic auto steer controls the tractor through a proportional valve plumbed into the steering circuit next to the orbital valve, while electric auto steer turns the steering wheel with a motor mounted on the column. With RTK, both typically hold about 2.5 cm pass-to-pass. Electric kits install in hours and move between tractors; hydraulic kits take longer to fit but give stronger, smoother control on heavy machines and slow, demanding work.

Key takeaways

  • Hydraulic auto steer adds an electro-hydraulic valve and a wheel-angle sensor to the existing steering circuit; electric kits replace or clamp onto the steering wheel.
  • With RTK corrections, both designs typically achieve about ±2.5 cm pass-to-pass accuracy on normal field work.
  • Electric steering wheel motor kits usually install in about 30 minutes to a few hours, while hydraulic kits often take a day or more.
  • Hydraulic systems handle heavy steering loads, very slow speeds and articulated or tracked machines better; electric kits win on cost, portability and simplicity.
  • Whichever you choose, the GNSS receiver, correction source and calibration matter as much as the steering actuator.

What is hydraulic auto steer?

Hydraulic auto steer is an autosteering system that steers the tractor by controlling hydraulic oil flow to the steering cylinder directly, using an electronically controlled valve block added to the existing steering circuit. The steering wheel does not move by itself; the guidance computer moves the wheels through hydraulics.

Most tractors have an orbital valve steering column: the steering wheel turns an orbital valve (also called a steering control unit or hand metering unit) that meters oil to the steering cylinder. A hydraulic kit inserts a proportional hydraulic steering valve in parallel with that unit. The controller reads a wheel-angle sensor on the front axle and the GNSS position, then opens the valve left or right to hold the line. When the driver turns the wheel, a pressure or flow sensor detects it and disengages the system.

Many larger tractors leave the factory "guidance-ready", with the steering valve and wiring already fitted, so only the receiver, display and activation are needed. For a general overview of how guidance computes the line, see our guide to tractor auto-steering systems and calibration.

How does an electric steering wheel motor kit work?

An electric kit steers by turning the steering wheel itself with a motor, so the tractor's own hydraulics do the rest exactly as they would for a human driver. Nothing in the hydraulic circuit is opened.

There are two common designs. In the first, the original steering wheel is removed and replaced by a motorised wheel that bolts onto the column spline. In the second, a friction roller or gear presses against the existing wheel rim. Integrated motor-wheel units are now the more common design for retrofit kits because they have less slip and lower backlash.

A typical electric kit has three parts: the steering wheel motor, a roof-mounted GNSS receiver or smart antenna, and a cab console. Our SAgro180 auto-steering kit follows that layout, with a motor rated at 7 N·m (13 N·m peak), a 10.1-inch console, CAN and RS232 motor protocols, and guidance on straight, curved, U-turn and diagonal lines. The motor receives steering commands from the console and reports its speed or position back, while the receiver's position and heading close the loop.

Hydraulic vs electric auto steer: side-by-side comparison

The short version: hydraulic auto steer is stronger and more integrated, electric auto steer is cheaper, quicker to fit and portable. The table summarises the practical differences our engineers discuss with dealers and farmers.

Is hydraulic auto steer more accurate than electric?

Not by much on ordinary field work. With RTK corrections and good calibration, both designs typically hold about ±2.5 cm pass-to-pass; the receiver and correction source set that ceiling, not the actuator.

Where hydraulic auto steer pulls ahead is consistency under load. A valve acting directly on the steering cylinder has no gear backlash and no torque limit, and the wheel-angle sensor gives the controller a direct measure of where the wheels point. That helps in these situations:

  • Very slow speeds, such as planting vegetables or transplanting at 1–3 km/h, where small steering corrections need fine control.
  • Heavy front loads, wide implements or side slopes that pull the tractor off line.
  • Large four-wheel-drive, articulated or tracked machines with heavy steering effort.

Electric kits are well suited to the majority of tillage, spraying, seeding and fertilising work at normal speeds. In our experience, poor results with electric kits usually trace to a loose motor mount, worn steering components, wrong antenna offsets or skipped calibration rather than the motor itself. Whatever the actuator, the position comes from the roof antenna; a 1408-channel receiver such as our S20 GNSS smart antenna tracks GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou and QZSS and is IP67 sealed for cab-roof mounting. Accuracy levels and correction choices are compared in our tractor GPS guidance guide.

How long does it take to install each type of auto steer GPS kit?

An electric auto steer GPS kit typically takes about 30 minutes to a few hours, while a hydraulic retrofit usually takes a day or more. The difference is the plumbing: a hydraulic kit means opening the steering circuit, fitting a valve, routing hoses and mounting a wheel-angle sensor on the axle.

A typical electric install follows these steps:

  1. Check the tractor. Confirm column spline size, free play in the steering and that the tractor tracks straight; worn tie-rod ends or kingpins should be fixed first.
  2. Fit the motor wheel. Remove the original steering wheel, fit the correct spline adapter and mount the motor with its anti-rotation bracket.
  3. Mount the antenna. Fix the GNSS antenna on the cab roof centreline and measure its height and offsets from the rear axle.
  4. Install the console and wiring. Mount the display, connect power from the tractor battery and route the motor and antenna cables away from moving parts.
  5. Configure and calibrate. Enter vehicle dimensions, set up the RTK correction source and run the heading, wheel-angle and steering-response calibrations on a flat field.
  6. Test. Drive A-B lines in both directions and check pass-to-pass error before real work.

Our SAgro200 auto-steering system is designed for an install of about 30 minutes, with an electric steering wheel, an IP67 RTK smart antenna and a rugged tablet with 4G, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and CAN. For a hydraulic kit, add hose fitting, oil top-up, bleeding the circuit and sensor alignment to that list.

Will an auto steer system fit my hydraulic steering tractor?

Almost certainly, because every modern tractor uses hydraulic power steering. The real question is whether you want an electric kit that works on top of that hydraulic steering, or a hydraulic kit plumbed into it. When farmers search for an "auto steer system for hydraulic" steering, they are usually asking the second question.

When retrofitting a GPS tractor, check these points:

Tractor situationUsual best choiceWhy
Older or mid-size tractor, conventional steering columnElectricFits with a spline adapter; no hydraulic work
Several tractors sharing one kitElectricMove the motor and antenna between machines
Factory guidance-ready tractorHydraulic (activate existing valve)Valve and wiring already fitted
Large 4WD, articulated or tracked machineHydraulicHigh steering effort and loads
Very slow precision work (vegetables, transplanting)Hydraulic, or a high-torque electric kitFine control at low speed
Tilting or telescopic column with unusual splineElectric with a specific adapterConfirm adapter before ordering

For hydraulic kits, the steering system type matters: open-centre, closed-centre and load-sensing circuits need different valve configurations, which is why orbital valve steering kits are sold per tractor model. A hydraulic auto steer orbital valve kit for one model rarely fits another without changes. For electric kits, send the dealer a photo of the steering column and the spline count before ordering.

What does each cost, and what maintenance do they need?

Hydraulic auto steer usually costs noticeably more than an electric kit because of the model-specific valve block, hoses, wheel-angle sensor and the extra installation labour. Electric kits are the most affordable way into autosteering, and factory-direct kits cost far less than integrated dealer systems.

The receiver, correction subscription or base station, and display are similar for both, so the difference is mainly in the steering actuator and labour. To judge payback on fuel, inputs and overlap, use our auto-steer savings calculator.

Maintenance checklist

  • Hydraulic: inspect hoses and fittings for leaks each season, keep hydraulic oil and filters clean (contamination can make the steering valve stick), check the wheel-angle sensor linkage for wear, and recalibrate after any axle or steering repair.
  • Electric: check the motor mount and anti-rotation bracket for looseness, inspect cables and connectors for chafing, keep firmware updated and recalibrate after moving the kit to another tractor.
  • Both: keep the antenna mount rigid, re-measure offsets if it is moved, and check that manual override disengages the system instantly.

Hydraulic or electric auto steer: which should you choose?

Choose electric if you want the lowest cost, a quick install, or one kit to move between tractors. Choose hydraulic auto steer if you run large or articulated machines, do very slow precision work, or have a factory guidance-ready tractor.

  • Mixed fleet, tight budget: an electric kit per working season, moved as needed.
  • Dealers and distributors: our SAgro100 GPS auto-pilot kit is an entry-level electric kit with ±2.5 cm pass-to-pass that suits private-label lines.
  • High-hour, high-horsepower tractors: hydraulic, installed by a technician who knows the steering circuit.

Frequently asked questions

What is an orbital valve in tractor steering?

An orbital valve, also called a steering control unit or hand metering unit, sits at the base of the steering column. When the driver turns the wheel, it meters hydraulic oil to the steering cylinder in proportion to how far the wheel turns. Hydraulic auto steer kits add an electronic valve alongside it, while electric kits simply turn the wheel that drives it.

Can you add auto steer to an old tractor?

Yes. Electric steering wheel motor kits are the usual choice for older tractors because they bolt onto the steering column with a spline adapter and do not touch the hydraulic circuit. Before retrofitting, fix any excessive steering free play or worn front-axle parts, because a loose steering system limits accuracy whatever kit you fit.

Is hydraulic auto steer better than an electric steering wheel?

Hydraulic auto steer is better for heavy machines, very slow precision work and steep or loaded conditions, because it controls the steering cylinder directly with no torque limit. For most tillage, spraying and seeding at normal speeds, an electric steering wheel achieves similar pass-to-pass accuracy at lower cost and with a much simpler installation.

How accurate is auto steer GPS on a tractor?

With RTK corrections and correct calibration, auto steer GPS typically holds around 2.5 centimetres pass-to-pass. With satellite-based or SBAS corrections, expect roughly 15 to 30 centimetres or more. Accuracy also depends on antenna mounting, terrain, implement drift and the condition of the tractor's steering components, not only on the steering actuator.

What are orbital valve steering kits?

Orbital valve steering kits are hydraulic auto steer installation kits matched to a specific tractor model. They usually include the proportional steering valve, hoses and fittings to connect it to the orbital valve and steering cylinder, a wheel-angle sensor with brackets, and wiring to the guidance controller. Because circuits differ between models, kits are not universal.

Can an electric auto steer kit be moved between tractors?

Yes, that is one of its main advantages. You remove the motor wheel, antenna and console, fit them to the second tractor with the correct spline adapter, enter the new vehicle dimensions and repeat the calibration. Many farms buy one kit and move it between the planting and spraying tractor during the season.

Does hydraulic auto steer affect the tractor warranty?

It can, because a hydraulic kit opens and modifies the steering circuit. Rules vary by manufacturer and dealer, so check your warranty terms before fitting an aftermarket valve. An electric kit does not alter the hydraulic system and is easier to remove, which is one reason many owners of newer tractors start with electric steering.
