Tractor auto-steering: costs, savings and payback
By the Mars Geosystems technical team. Updated .
Short answer: An RTK auto-steering system holds about ±2.5 cm pass-to-pass, which cuts the overlap of a typical manually steered tractor (often 5–10 % of implement width). On a farm with hundreds of hectares that overlap is seed, fertiliser, fuel and hours you no longer pay for; many farms recover the cost in one or two seasons. Use the calculator on this page with your own numbers.
Where the savings come from
Overlap between passes, skipped strips, and driver fatigue. With auto-steer each pass starts exactly where the last one ended, day or night, so you also gain working hours.
What a kit includes
An electric steering wheel motor, a GNSS RTK antenna and a guidance console. Our SAgro200 and SAgro180 install in about 30 minutes without hydraulics.
Corrections for agriculture
Use a local base station with radio for full independence, or CORS/NTRIP over 4G where coverage is good.

Frequently asked
What accuracy do I need for seeding and spraying?
For row crops, bed forming and controlled traffic you want RTK, about ±2.5 cm pass-to-pass. Sub-metre GPS is only adequate for broad-acre spraying.
Will auto-steer work on an old tractor?
Usually yes, because the electric steering wheel replaces the original wheel rather than connecting to hydraulics.
